Personal Development, Health and Physical Education is one of the Key Learning Areas in the NSW Primary Curriculum. It has been designed to provide educational opportunities that prepare all students for effective and responsible participation in their society, taking account of moral, ethical and spiritual considerations. It is hoped that students will develop the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes which are essential for all students to succeed in and beyond their primary schooling.

There are three content strands to the PDHPE syllabus. These are:

  1. Health, Wellbeing and Relationships
  2. Movement Skills and Performance
  3. Health, Safe and Active Lifestyles

The PDHPE syllabus addresses contemporary health and physical activity concepts important to students. These are embedded in a Stage-appropriate manner through the content. These contexts include:

  • alcohol and other drugs
  • food and nutrition
  • personal identity
  • mental health and wellbeing
  • relationships
  • sexuality and sexual health
  • safety (including child protection)
  • health benefits of physical activity
  • fundamental movement skills
  • rhythmic and expressive movement
  • individual/group/team physical activities
  • initiative/challenge physical activities
  • aquatics
  • lifelong physical activities
