Learning in this Key Learning Area is essential to the development of students’ numeracy skills. Numeracy is not just maths, it is how we use our skills and knowledge in all areas of the curriculum. At Corpus Christi, because we believe that learning is individual and that students learn at different rates, we build onto students’ knowledge and skills and this assists in their numeracy and mathematical development.
Mathematics equipment is easily accessible in the classroom and we encourage students to take risks in their exploration of concepts and to build up confidence in themselves as mathematicians.
Mathematics involves observing, representing and investigating patterns and relationships. Our world is filled with situations where opportunities to develop their skills in numeracy arise and parents can easily help their children at home by encouraging them to solve simple problems through discussion and trialling possible solutions.
The Mathematics K–10 Syllabus contains the syllabus content for Early Stage 1 to Stage 5. Within each stage, the syllabus is organised into the three content strands:
The components of Working Mathematically are integrated into each of these strands.
Students at Corpus Christi are involved in a daily 1-hour numeracy session that encompasses elements from each of the Mathematics strands.
